Hughes to Address 'Gemological Heresies' in Bangkok

The GIA Gemstone Gathering will be held June 29, but RSVP by June 27.

RAPAPORT..The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will feature the topic “Gemological Heresies” at the group's  47th Gemstone Gathering on June 29 in Bangkok.  Author Richard W. Hughes will provide the presentation and challenge longstanding beliefs associated with gemological science.
“There are certain ideas that gemologists accept as being indisputably true, and Richard, who is a highly respected expert in his field, is not afraid to contest these ideas,” said Kenneth Scarratt, managing director of GIA Southeast Asia and director of the GIA Laboratory in Bangkok.
Those who enjoy independent thinking and are unafraid to have cherished beliefs challenged, will not want to miss this evening.
Hughes has spent many years in Asia, where his interest in gemstones was first kindled. He has visited most of the major ruby and sapphire deposits around the world, setting the stage for his popular book, [Ruby & Sapphire]. His latest book, co-authored with Vlad Yavorskyy, is titled [Terra Spinel].
Hughes is the senior vice president of Hong Kong-based Sino Resources Mining Corporation, which mines sapphire in Laos and Australia.
GIA Thailand’s Gemstone Gathering is free and begins at 6 p.m. on June 29 in the “White Room” of the lower lobby of the Crowne Plaza Hotel (formerly known as the Pan Pacific), Lumpini Park, Bangkok. Please RSVP to GIA  by June 27 and call  02.632.4090 or 02.237.9575.
