Urban Bazaar, a trendy new gift boutique in San Francisco, is now carrying a line of Fair Trade jewelry designed by Mata Traders of Chicago, IL and produced in India. This hip line of jewelry is not only ethically-sourced, but affordable as well.
San Francisco, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) May 25, 2011
Urban Bazaar, a Fair Trade and locally handmade boutique in San Francisco's Inner Sunset district, located at 1371 9th Ave, specializes in handcrafted, eco friendly, and ethically sourced accessories, jewelry, and home décor gifts. To add to their already impressive jewelry selection, they have recently started carrying a new spring line of Fair Trade jewelry designed by Mata Traders of Chicago, IL, and produced in India. The pieces, which range from wire wrapped rings, to striking cuff bracelets, to funky necklaces and bold earrings, are priced from $10-$30. The line stands out for its bright silver and gold, fluid designs, and bold centerpieces.
“We chose the Mata line of jewelry for a number of reasons: the great prices, the high quality of craftsmanship, and the uniqueness of the designs. And most importantly is the fact that these fantastic pieces of jewelry come from a Fair Trade background,” says Urban Bazaar owner Brandi Chalker. “The artisans in India work in the home-based sector of the economy. They work with an organization which helps to create employment pathways for these disadvantaged artisans, and ensures that the entire supply chain is free of exploitation. Workers have safe and healthy working conditions, earn fair wages, and absolutely do not utilize child labor.”
Fair Trade certification is an important deciding factor in merchandising at Urban Bazaar. The owners have made it a central focus of their business to only source products that are made in an ethical, non-exploitative manner. Choosing products from Fair Trade certified companies and organizations is an easy way to be assured that each item meets strict standards of fair pay, safe working conditions, lack of child labor, and other important factors impacting disadvantaged artisans in third world countries.
Mata Traders is a perfect example of how Fair Trade relationships are helping many of these disadvantaged artisans in India and Nepal. Their textile items like clothing and purses (Urban Bazaar carries their purses, too, although not their clothing) are made by women's cooperatives in India and Nepal, where the women are given gainful employment and benefits like medical and child care. Their jewelry pieces are handmade in India by small-scale, home-based artisans who benefit from sustainable employment, technical training, and the ability to keep their families together by working from home.
To purchase jewelry from the latest Mata line, or other great Fair Trade gifts, visit Urban Bazaar at 1371 9th Ave (between Judah and Irving Streets) San fransisco.
