THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Making handmade jewelery may be a hobby for many but creating a niche of their own in the jewelery designing section is something followed by a few people. A techie by profession Smitha Indira is creating waves with her beaded wonders through her brand "Smingry Jewels".It has been nine years since Smitha has been into jewelery designing. She is probably one of those very few who took time from their busy schedule to follow their dreams.

“I started making jewellery as a hobby where I initially made small earrings using beads watching "YouTube Videos". One of my friends saw my designs and encouraged me to work more on it.
Smitha uses a wide array of materials such as Wooden Beads, Glass, Crystal and imported rubberised beads through which she makes fabulous designs.

Procuring materials is a more difficult task than actually designing the jewellery. She usually imports beads from abroad and from northern states. For the past two years, she makes "customised jewellery". The customisation depends on something that can be paired with the customer's attire. Sometimes she even sources antique jewelery from Mumbai and Chennai and does modifications on it to suit her customer’s taste.

The international-jewelry brand Tiffany & Co has reopened its Collins street store after a 10-month-renovation. 

The new store encompasses three levels totalling approximately 1,250 square metres of retail space.

According to managing director of Tiffany & Co Australia, Glen Schlehuber, “The store closed-temporarily to undertake major-redevelopment from October 2010. During this time we traded from a temporary store until the doors of the newly redeveloped store opened,” Schlehuber said.

Statistics of the 28th Hong Kong International Jewelry Show, held between March 4-8, 2011, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition-Center, reveal a significant increase in the number of exhibitors and countries taking part in this annual prestigious show, the largest in Asia and the third largest jewelry show in the World. While in the 27th version of the event held in 2010, the number of exhibitors and countries taking part were 2,673 and 44 respectively, the corresponding-figures for the year 2011 were 2,800 and 46.

OTTAWA -: Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq-suggested Monday she's not ready to use her new recall powers to pull children's jewelry pieces known to be packed with cadmium off the market.


Aglukkaq, speaking at a daycare-centre in Ottawa, proposed what amounts to a ban on cadmium in children's jewelry in the wake of government tests that have revealed items with high levels of the toxic chemical have been sold in Canada in recent-years.

Amid a host of deep-seated economic problems, Vietnam’s large trade deficit shows no sign of abating. But the “Vietnam effect” helped Switzerland to post a record monthly trade surplus in May, according to Swiss-customs.
